Yesterday's announcement seemed to shock some of you. Here is a calm explanation, and a more informative conversation.

We received an assignment yesterday to Ellsworth AFB. Ellsworth is located 16 miles east of Rapid City, which is near the Black Hills and very near Badlands and Wind Cave National Parks. If you are a fan of the HBO show Deadwood, you are probably thinking that Ellsworth was a prospector in the show. True, Deadwood, THE DEADWOOD is located just northwest of Rapid City.
If you click on the photo map above, I have marked the approximate location of the base. And if you wander over to map quest or google maps you will be able to map its exact location.
Our report no later date is January 30, 2011. Very soon! So when we pack up our Christmas stuff we will be packing up the rest of the house too.

We weren't expecting an assignment so soon. Dave had applied to switch from fighter jets to heavy aircraft. In the hopes that we could open the possibilities of bases that are not in the desert southwest. It would have probably always been our fate to live in the southwest with the F-16.
Dave was accepted even though he had longer to stay at this base than what was listed as an acceptable cut off date. We thought we might have to wait a year to hear if we were moving, or if they would just move him to the heavies here at the base we are currently on.
We are very excited to get an assignment to the Midwest. A place that will have 4 seasons. Real lakes and rivers, lots of camping and nature to enjoy.
Katie, after living in the southwest for 6 months, told me recently, " We have got to get Nathan out of the desert!" I couldn't agree more.
